'Broadband' speed tests in Guernsey / Cable & Wireless / Wave Telecom

ADSL services in Guernsey are provided by Cable and Wireless. Advertised with a 1mbit or 2mbit speed, for many users they seldom, if ever acheive this. I have observed my service to drop to 38kbits /sec, which is slower than a modem.

Guernsey is a small island; it has no consumer protection legislation. Cable & Wireless operate an effective monopoly since Guernsey Telecoms was sold to them by our Government, with the promise to Islanders of a 'World Class Telecoms Service'.

The wild see-saw patterns appear to reflect absolute over-subscription/saturation. Acceptable service is only acheivable in the dead of night, when everyone's asleep.

This issue hs been reported as a fault to Wave Telecom (they re-sell the C&W service) several weeks ago but nothing has been done to correct it. I understand that there are many, many users complaining about this same problem. In fact I've never enjoyed acceptable broadband quality since I returned to Guernsey several years ago.
